White Smoke at the Vatican

The Catholics have wrapped up their little shindig we know as Conclave. I'm sure the Cardinals are sad to put the costume party / illumanitiesque secrecy behind them, and get back to molestation and self-deprecation. Some choice words pertaining to the new Grand Poobah can be found in this Yahoo News article.

"Ratzinger's stern leadership of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, the modern successor to the Inquisition, delighted conservative Catholics but upset moderates and other Christians whose churches he described as deficient."

Oooh, more inquisition! Can we get the Crusades back too? Oh wait the White House is on top of that ...

"In a document in 2000, he branded other Christian churches as deficient -- shocking Anglicans, Lutherans and other Protestants in ecumenical dialogue with Rome for years."

Note to Christians everywhere: if you aren't catholic, you are no better than the heathens. HA! I just grouped myself with John Kerry.

and finally, gracefully:

"We are moving toward a dictatorship of relativism which does not recognize anything as definitive and has as its highest value one's own ego and one's own desires,"

Will of the Church, Will of God. Arrogant bastards.

Voter Verification Example

I haven't posted since when? Since Bush won the election? Oh. Well he won. Shit. I blame the status quo. Don't switch horesemen mid-apocalypse and such. The smallest margin of victory by an incumbent president since 1916 goes to show we remain a nation divided. Anyway.

It was a Democratic victory for the state of Colorado - we picked up net gains of Democratic senators to reclaim the majority in the state senate, and beat out beermonger Pete Coors for a Washington Senator spot with former Attorney General Ken Salazar.

I don't buy any of the conspiracy theories floating around about the e-voting problems. But I think e-voting without verification is asking for trouble, as any reasonable geek knew years ago, and as we are experiencing now. Fact is there were measurable problems caused by the electronic voting machines, with nearly 4,000 extra votes being given to Bush in one Ohio location, and another showing negative 25,000 votes total. With a known amount of errors, it is safe to say there are errors we haven't seen and will never see, negligible as they may be.

Voter verification is something we need to seriously take a look at. For all I know my vote didn't count, and I have no way of knowing if it did. I hope to help this movement in Colorado. Will talk more about it when I can!

In the meantime check out this brilliant artist rendition of exactly what I was brainstorming about last night: image from Wired.

A Soldier's Story

War is hell.

William S. Lind On War

The man who wrote the book on modern warfare tactics writes a weekly war column.

From his first entry in January 2003:

In this series, I propose to look at what is happening—with Iraq, North Korea, Afghanistan and other outposts of the new American imperium—from the standpoint of military theory. Hopefully, that will enable us all to make sense out of the bits and pieces we get each day as "news."

And from the most recent (4GW is 4th Generation Warfare, or war with non-state entities):

Our nightly bombing of Fallujah illustrates another important point about 4GW: to call it “terrorism” is a misnomer. In fact, terrorism is merely a technique, and we use it too when we think it will benefit us. In Madam Albright’s boutique war on Serbia, when the bombing campaign against the Serbian Army in Kosovo failed, we resorted to terror bombing of civilian targets in Serbia proper. Now, we are using terror bombing on Fallujah.

Provisional Ballots Mess Begins

In Michigan, a fedral judge has ruled that provisional ballots filed in the wrong precinct must be counted. This will be appealed.

Meanwhile in Florida, the State Supreme Court has ruled that you MUST be in the correct precinct for your provisional ballot to count.

The point of a provisional ballot is to give those people who didn't register to vote a chance to vote. Making the process as simple as possible for the voter is paramount in getting high levels of turnout. Let the litigation begin!

Meanwhile, this shows me we will never simply *elect* the president again. It will come down to court cases every year from now on, and it will only get worse. That sound you hear is the elctoral college system cracking under its own bloated, outdated weight. If Kerry wins, I'd be surprised if he even gets sworn in on time.

Gibson Blog Returns!

After a year off, William Gibson is posting once again. Why is he bloggin' again when he should be writing the follow up to Pattern Recognition? I can only assume post one is an explanation:

Why?

Because the United States currently has, as Jack Womack so succintly puts it, a president who makes Richard Nixon look like Abraham Lincoln.

And because, as the Spanish philospher Unamuno said, "At times, to be silent is to lie."

Final Debate Notes

I took several pages of handwritten notes during the debate (since laptop is at Apple for the 3rd time in a row), and will blog em later on. You can read a transcript here, and check out Factcheck.org's third debate notes here.

Meanwhile chew on these poll results:

The Gallup Poll shows a Kerry win: 52% to 39%.
A CBS Poll also shows a Kerry win: 39% to 25%.
A ABC Poll shown a statistical tie: Kerry 42% v. Bush 41%, but note "Among independents polled by ABC News, 42% thought Kerry was the winner, and 35% thought Bush was the winner."

Without hesitation, I answered, "Because I believe in your vision for Iraq and would be honored to help you make it a reality." Today America and the coalition are making steady progress toward that vision."

Kerry Rally

This past wednesday I was fortunate enough to get into an invite only Kerry rally / speech. It was on a parking lot at the airport, where we watched Kerry's custom painted plane land and his motorcade drive up.

It was an energy producing experience. Kerry talked about Colorado's 700,000 people without health care (hi there!), Bush's attempts to brush a slipping economy and shaky situation in Iraq under the rug, among other trademark talking points. He was an impressive speaker, and it was very cool to lock eyes with the man who would be president. If it wasn't just me, he was intentionally talking to me and Sam directly, among the youngest voters in the crowd.

Pictures here!

I'm practically an alpha pirate, pretty much one step below the massive piracy rings that are the real problem in music and movie piracy. When does Iraq fail?

A question for my conservative reader(s) :D

The best argument for the Iraq war that I've heard is it's an experiment in the war on terror. Try to change the face of the war, and maybe instill democracy in the process. Fair Statement?

What I want to know, is when does the Iraq war become a failure? Is it a death toll? A % of secure land? A lack of secure, widespread free elections? Or will failure ever be a relevant description for the situation?

Drinking Age Article

Interesting article on the drinking age and the Bush daughters underage drinking exploits.

The quote that wraps up the article and which i find quite interesting is: "The persecution of the Bush daughters isn't about safety; it's just an attempt of a neo-puritanical faction of American society to impose its morality on everyone else." This is of course, entirely accurate! It is the exact same thing that I face everyday living as a commando in the drug war. My drug of choice is marijuana, not alcohol, thank you very much. Unfortunately, the current figure head for the "neo-puritanical faction of American society" is the Bush daughters father. And thats why so much noise is made over the Bush twins drinking - you can't claim to live one way in the public but do the opposite in private, because when you're caught it gets all blown out of proportion!

Moore's WarRoom

Fact checking and notes.

Star Trek apartment

They don't call us geeks for nothing.

The best Star Trek set reproduction I've seen! And it's a domicile!

Obligatory Fahrenheit 9/11 mini review

Watched the movie this weekend. That is, I downloaded a fairly decent bootleg (no doubt a theatre cam) using BitTorrent. Mike Moore said it was ok to steal it. Impressions follow.

It was more emotionally exploitative than I had hoped for. Probably a little more than I expected, even. The montage for the actual 9/11 event was subdued albeit heart wrenching. The close ups of a mother describing her grief at losing a son to war affected me the most and could have been cut back a little I think. Subtitled Iraqi mothers screaming at their loss of family were equally disturbing. The point (I hope) of all this severe emotion is to impress the silly liberal ideal that killing someone is wrong, and touches lives in ways we can't comprehend. Weird concept.

I knew once I had watched the film, I could label it. Clearly Moore's bias prevents this from being called a documentary. This movie is reality television. Every single thing you see is real, but the images and sounds are put together in a produced manner to impress a particular point of view. A thin line of actual reality is shown, but truth is reflected no matter how shallow it may seem. That said, the movie is effective in laying out the truth vis a vis the Bush admin's fundamental mishandling of the War on Terror. Don't call it propaganda, unless you are ready to call White House press releases the same.

As a friend just told me, I don't agree with how Mike Moore handled the whole movie but someone had to make that movie, and it wasn't me. Laying out everything in a line like he did will open some eyes. Nothing new in the movie, but a good way to present facts en masse.

Ken Lay Indicted

Scumbag pleads not guilty, gets off on 500K bail.

Maimi purged voters get to vote!

They won't get away with it this time.

The state does a surprising 180. Good for them. Too bad these people didn't get to vote in 2000 and we got stuck with a dingleberry for a president!

UPDATE
Above link may be broken for registration that even I won't bother to do. This decision comes at the release of the 47,000 names that made up the list of voters who may be purged. Florida will restore voting rights to some 2,500 of the 47,000 they intended to deny voting in 2004. That compared to 170,000 some odd voters purged in 2000.
